In The Life Media, producers of IN THE LIFE, the award-winning nationally televised newsmagazine about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues, today announced that it has received a $1 million gift from Henry van Ameringen, a longtime philanthropist to LGBT and HIV/AIDS organizations. $100,000 of van Ameringen’s gift will be used to match new and increased contributions.

van Ameringen’s grant comes at a pivotal moment for the organization, which has emerged as the media leader for the LGBT movement just as issues like marriage equality and anti-gay bullying are becoming part of the national dialogue. Debuting in 1992, In The Life Media was the first to bring the real stories reflecting the LGBT experience into living rooms across the country. Today it is much more than a TV show, countering injustice and misinformation, and covering stories the mainstream media ignores through traditional and innovative media including social networks, online community organizing and blogs.

“Henry’s unprecedented gift is transformative,” said In The Life Media Executive Director Michelle Kristel. “It allows us to expand into new and emerging media technologies, broaden the scope of our community outreach and marketing initiatives and continue doing what we have done so successfully for the past twenty years: tell the stories, cover the issues and advance equality for LGBT people.”

Henry van Ameringen graduated from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He retired from International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) as European Vice-President in charge of Fragrance marketing. In addition to his service with In The Life Media, van Ameringen is on the board of Fountain House, a clubhouse of people with mental illnesses where they can find a job, a home and friends. He is President of the van Ameringen Foundation, a family foundation that deals with mental health and mental illness in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. van Ameringen is also President of the H. van Ameringen Foundation, a personal foundation that concentrates on HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues, mostly in New York City. He serves as co-chair of the Board of Directors of In The Life Media.

For twenty years, In The Life Media has been a leading media organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movement. One of the nation’s most honored and influential LGBT groups, In The Life Media creates social and political change by examining issues critical to LGBT individuals and providing audiences with powerful ways to advance equality within, and beyond, their communities. Produced by In The Life Media, the Emmy-nominated series, IN THE LIFE, was the first—and remains the only—LGBT newsmagazine on public television. IN THE LIFE is a two-time Emmy Award nominee, a Lambda Legal Liberty Award honoree, a Seigenthaler Award recipient from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and a Ribbon of Hope Award recipient from The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
